Carbon Monoxide: Know the Signs |
Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odorless and dangerous to people. It is created as a by-product of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels—such as gasoline, natural gas, propane, coal, heating oil—and almost any other combustible material. |
When inhaled, carbon monoxide combines with the blood, preventing it from absorbing oxygen. When a person is exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide, symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea and sleepiness. In extreme cases, CO exposure may cause death. |
Steps you can take to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning include: |
Before each heating season, have your heating system checked by a qualified plumbing or heating professional. |
Make sure appliance vents and exhaust ducts are not blocked, are in good condition and are properly connected to exhaust the combustion gases out of doors. |
Check your chimney/flue to make sure it is not blocked by dirt or bird nests. |
Never operate a motor vehicle or other gas-powered engines in an enclosed space. |
When using an unvented space heater, open a window an inch or more as stated in the space heater operating instructions. |
